The Rapid Access Cloud has multiple distinct regions: one in Calgary (Calgary), and two in Edmonton (Area51 and Edmonton). These regions allow you to reuse some resources across the regions, while other resources are stored independently per region. This section will help you identify what steps might be required to use multiple regions successfully.

Shared Resources

Quota

Your quota and usage is shared between regions, so an instance in Calgary and an instance in Edmonton both count against your quota.

Images and Snapshots

Images and snapshots are synced between the regions to make moving between regions convenient. Although the image will immediately appear as available in other regions it will take approximately one hour for the image to finish transferring before being usable. Therefore, please wait at least two hours before snapshotting an image and relaunching it in another region.

Orchestration

Heat Stacks are available simultaneously in each of the regions at once.

DNS

DNS records are available simultaneously in each of the regions at once.

Username/Password (Keystone)

Your username and password is the same no matter which region you choose to use.

Independent Resources

Instances

Instances are region specific, so only instances created in the region you are logged into will be visible.

Volumes and Volume Snapshots

Volumes and their snapshots are region specific, so only volumes created in the region you are logged into will be visible.

Swift Objects and Containers

Swift objects and containers are also region specific, however you can set up container replication to keep a container and objects between two regions in sync. See instructions on how to set up container sync with Object Storage on the Rapid Access Cloud.

SSH Keys

SSH Keys are region specific. If you wish to use the same SSH key in multiple regions you will need to import your ssh key into other regions.

Security Groups

Security Groups are also region specific. If you wish to use the same security group in another region you will need to manually create a second copy in the second region.

Floating IPs

Floating IPs are region specific. You can release a floating IP in one region, and then get a new different floating IP in one of the other regions instead.
